Most roof leaks start small: a cracked tile, a slipped slate, a gap in the flashing where the roof meets a wall or chimney. The stain on the ceiling is often well away from where the water gets in, because it runs along the timbers before it drips.

Slipped, cracked and missing tiles
Tiles and slates slip when the nails or clips holding them corrode, and crack in frost or under a stray foot. One missing tile lets rain straight onto the felt underneath, and old felt doesn't last long once it's exposed.

Ridge and hip tiles are bedded in mortar, and that mortar breaks down long before the tiles do. Loose ridge tiles are a real hazard in high wind, so they're worth sorting quickly.
